Thousands of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), with slogans like ‘Nehru Zinda Hai, Periyar Tum Bhi Zind Ho’ have come out to save education, come on Thursday at Mandi House in Delhi.
From here, a large procession of students came out of the Ministry to surround the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The protesting students were demanding the sacking of the vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the withdrawal of the fee hike.
The students submitted this memorandum of demand to Amit Khare, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development. The memo also demanded a fair probe into the attack on JNU students. However, Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank is not yet present in Delhi. Nishank has gone to Chennai to attend a government program.
Several prominent leaders of opposition parties accompanied the students during the demonstration. Chief among them is CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, leader Prakash Karat, Vrinda Karat, CPI leader D. Raja, former Union Minister Sharad Yadav, former Delhi Minister, and Congress leader Kiran Walia and Dalit leader Udit Raj.
In JNU, on the night of January 5, 36 students and several professors were injured by masked attackers with hockey sticks and iron rods. Apart from JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, University of Delhi, Aligarh Muslim University, Jadavpur University of West Bengal, Mumbai, Chennai, Punjab, and Students from many universities of the country including Chandigarh participated.
After marching about 2 km from Mandi House, the protesting students and leaders reached the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Here he sat on the main road and staged a sit-in. During this, the students shouted slogans against JNU Vice-Chancellor Jagdish Kumar and Delhi Police.
Aishi Ghosh, president of JNU Students’ Union, who injured in the attack, joined the protest despite bandages in his hands and head. Aishi Ghosh, along with the student union secretary Satish Yadav Faculty and a delegation of students, met officials in the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
