In a tragic incident, at least 125 people have died in a stampede at a football ground in Indonesia. As per reports, two policemen have also been killed in the crush, which has now become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters.
Going into detail, Arema football club from Malang city in the East Java region lost 3-2 to the Persebaya team from Surabaya on Saturday night. The fans of the Arema team, who were deeply disappointed, started throwing bottles and other objects at the players and soccer officials.
Eyewitnesses claimed that some fans stormed the Kanjuruhan Stadium and demanded the organizers to tell them why the team, which had not lost to Persbheya in their home region for 23 years, had now lost.
Police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch and thousands surged towards exits as the panic spread. In this process, a stampede took place. As many as 34 people, including two police officers, were killed on the spot. 300 people were rushed to eight hospitals. Among them, 91 died while undergoing treatment while 11 are in critical condition. On the other hand, violence broke out outside the stadium and around five police vehicles were set on fire. Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ordered an investigation into the accident.
