International e-commerce giant Amazon is said to have launched a probe into allegations that some of the company’s legal representatives in India bribed government officials.
Reports revealed the company had sent a senior corporate counsel on leave in the matter. However, Amazon has not confirmed this. If not, an Amazon spokesman said the company would not tolerate corruption at all. He said the company would conduct a thorough investigation into the unethical activities and take appropriate action.
Amazon is already facing several charges in India. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is investigating allegations of market competition violations, exploitative pricing policy and the preference given only to certain traders on its platform. In this context, the news that the Indian representatives of the company were corrupt for business gain came to prominence.
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has demanded a CBI probe into the allegations, as it is a matter of government credibility. The association has demanded that the names of the officials involved in the affair be revealed and that strict action be taken against them.
