Few Mosques in Hyderabad introduced free Covid-19 related services for the poor in the recent times. This year, the aftermath of Covid turned dangerous due to rise in black fungus (Mucormycosis) complication cases. Most of the cases were reported in third or fourth week from the day of Covid infection.
In this regard, three mosques in the city are now integrated with dental and ophthalmic apparatus and infrastructure to test in bulk atleast 5000 Covid recovered patients for Mucormycosis. On Thursday, mucormycosis screening drive started at Masjid Ishaq at NS Kunta, Masjid Muhammed Mustafa at Rajendranagar Masjid Omar-e-Shifa at Shaheenagar in the city. These mosques run under the aid of helping hands foundation.
Medical experts and technicians in ophthalmology, Dental and ENT, besides general physicians will take up screening of post-Covid patients for mucor detection. The mosque management also provides online counselling and diagnosis facility for those who cannot visit he centre.
According to Dr Arshia Akbar, senior ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon who is associated with the mosque centres, early detection of black fungus infection plays significant role in curing it soon.
The typical pathology may involve rhino (nose) sinuses, maxillary sinus (oral cavity), orbit (eye) and then brain finally. However the order could vary, the doctor added.
