Cyrus Mistry, the former chairman of the Tata group, was ousted from his position in 2016 following criticism of his performance. He was then replaced by Ratan Tata, whom Mistry had replaced four years earlier. This resulted in a long-running legal battle, with the Supreme Court of India ruling in favor of the Tata group eventually.
On Sunday, Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident while traveling to Mumbai. Another person was killed in the accident, while two more passengers were injured, as reported by the Western Maharashtra Police department. Mistry was traveling in a Mercedes car through the Palgahar district of Maharashtra, where the accident took place on Sunday afternoon. The vehicle is said to have hit a road divider while crossing a bridge over a river, resulting in Mistry’s death. The deputy chief minister of Maharashtra has ordered a police investigation into the matter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the death of Mistry, and took to Twitter to express his thoughts. He wrote, “The untimely demise of Shri Cyrus Mistry is shocking. He was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess. His passing away is a big loss to the world of commerce and industry. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”
