Setback to SP as  SC directs CBI for ‘status report’ on assets case

In a major setback, the Supreme Court has come down heavily on the probe status of the CBI into the assets case of the Samajwad Party patriarch, Mulayam Singh Yadav and his sons Akhilesh Yadav and Prateek Yadav.

On Monday, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the CBI to place the investigation report in the disproportionate assets case against SP leaders, within two weeks.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta asked the CBI to file its response in two weeks with regard to the present status of investigation in the assets case against Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh and his two sons.

The bench was hearing a plea filed by Congress leader Vishwanath Chaturvedi seeking a direction to the probe agency to appraise the court of the status of the investigation in the case.

The SC direction may come as big embarrassment to the SP, which has entered into an alliance with the BSP, to ensure the defeat of Narendra Modi-led BJP, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

In the 2014 polls, the BJP almost swept the polls winning 72 of the 80 LS seats in the Hindi heartland, Uttar Pradesh, to ensure the party gain simple majority, without its NDA allies.  However, the party’s strength in the 15^th Lok Sabha swelled over 300 seats.

The grand alliance formed by the SP-BSP was expected to upset the BJP calculations in the scheduled Lok Sabha polls.
