The Andhra Pradesh government, in a very predictable move, approached the Supreme Court of India, challenging the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s verdict regarding Amaravati. Last year, the AP HC declared that Amaravati is the sole capital of AP and that the government has no right to bring in 3 Capitals instead.
With respect to this case, the SC sent notices to 264 respondents today. The next hearing has been postponed to the 31st of this month, meaning that the respondents would have to respond by the last week of this month. The respondents include the Union Cabinet Secretary, Home, Justice, Environment, Forest, Education, Personnel Affairs, Training, NITI Aayog Secretaries, Principal Accountant General, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, AP CM Jagan, State Ministers, Legislative Assembly, and Legislative Council Chairpersons. Additionally, TDP, BJP, YSR Congress, Congress, CPI, CPM and Janasena parties are also a part of the list.
With so many respondents, the case is not expected to come to a hearing anytime soon, and it is safe to assume that the case might come to a hearing by the time elections roll around. With Jagan said to be planning to move his camp office to Visakhapatnam, it is to be seen what will happen.
