Mohan Lal’s Drishyam 2 Malayalam Movie Review – A thrilling sequel.!

Drishyam, starring Mohanlal and Meena was a magnanimous blockbuster in Malayalam and it was later remade in almost all mainstream languages across India. The sequel of the film titled, Drishyam 2 skipped theatrical release and is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video and here is our review.

Story:

George Kutty(Mohanlal) and his family are left traumatized after the fateful murder of Varun, the son of an ex-Inspector General. Six years after the incident, the police department still keep a close watch on George’s family in search of solid evidence. Can George, who is hell bent on protecting his family ward off the persistent investigation commissioned by the new IG? To know the answer, you should watch the film.

What about on-screen performances?

Mohanlal is a flawless actor and he is at his usual best in Drishyam 2. The way he portrays a concerned and deceptively intelligent head of the household is commendable. He carries the intense and demanding role with great composure and grace. Meena gets a meaty role and she does particularly well in emotional scenes. Murali Gopy as the IG who spearheads the investigation is very impressive. The film has a large support cast and all of them ably support the narrative.

What about off-screen talents?

Drishyam 2 carried humongous expectations, given the fact that it is the sequel of Drishyam which happens to be one of the biggest blockbusters in Malayalam cinema. Despite having so much at stake, the director Jeethu Joseph tries to keep things simple and doesn’t overcomplicate the basic plotline. The film starts off in a sluggish manner and the story doesn’t really move forward in the opening 40 minutes or so. The opening exchanges offer very little novelty. However, things start taking intersting turns in the latter half and this is where Jeethu Joseph hits the bullseye with his exquisite writing. The last 40 minutes of the film keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Each and every twist in the climax portion is narrated well and gels with the narrative.

Satheesh Kurup’s cinematography is an asset to the film. He carries the mood of the proceedings with his brilliant visual presentation. Anil Johnson’s background score in the latter half elevate many scenes to a whole new level. Editing could have been better as the opening 40 odd minutes are least bit engaging.

Verdict:

Drishyam 2 starts off on a dull note with uninteresting family scenes. However, the pacy second half and a magnificent climax make up for the dull star. The film is powered by excellent performances from the lead cast, especially Mohanlal. It is a thrilling sequel to the Drishyam.

Watch or Not?: Drishyam 2 will make for a good watch for those who love thrillers. The rest can give it a try if they have enough time to spare.
