Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India on Saturday morning by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.
He succeeds Justice SA Bobde, who retired on April 23. Justice Ramana will assume office till August 26, 2022. Born on August 27, 1957, in Ponnavaram village of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh, he is the second Chief Justice of India from the Telugu state.
Justice Ramana registered as an advocate on February 10, 1983. He was selected as a permanent judge of the AP high court in June 2000. He also performed duties as the acting Chief Justice of the AP high court between March and May 2013. Later, in the same year, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi high court, before being appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in February 2014.
He dealt with several high-profile cases in the Supreme court related to the repudiation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, restoration of the internet in the Valley, the restoration of the Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh and the Right to Information Act.
