It is the responsibility of the companies to protect people’s privacy: Supreme court

The Supreme Court recently said that people value personal privacy more than money and therefore the companies should have a responsibility to protect their privacy.

The Supreme Court heard a petition challenging the new privacy policy of popular messaging app WhatsApp. The Center has issued notices to WhatsApp to respond to the petition.

Karmanya Singh Sareen had earlier filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a stay on WhatsApp’s sharing of customer data with other companies under the new privacy policy.

The petitioner alleges that WhatsApp has the same rules in its privacy policy as in Europe and India.

The tribunal, headed by CJI Justice SA Bobde, heard the arguments and said, “They are afraid that the messages they send on WhatsApp will be shared with Facebook. Yours could be a company worth 2 to 3 trillions. But people value their personal privacy than money. Therefore, we have a responsibility to protect the privacy of the people.”
