Inter results row: “Only re-counting, no re-evaluation”

The ongoing inter results issue has caused a fresh stir in Telangana, with the officials saying that they would re-count, but not re-evaluate the answer sheets.

Responding to the issue, district intermediate education officer (DIEO), Hyderabad, B Jayaprada Bai said that there is no provision for re-evaluation in the intermediate board. She opined that a student can either apply for re-counting (checking the grand total) or re-verification (checking if all answers are marked). She clarified that no answer sheets will be re-evaluated or be awarded extra marks for every answer than what they were awarded before.

Shocked over this, the students opined that the whole purpose of applying for the re-verification will be lost if their papers are not re-checked. When the board has accepted that it committed mistakes while valuing the answer sheets, then there’s no point for it to deny the re-evaluation. The officials are supposed to check every answer sheet and rectify the mistakes committed earlier, such that every student would get the right justice for their efforts.

Meanwhile, the concerned officials have tried to calm down the issue, explaining about the re-evaluation system. Explaining about the three-tier evaluation system, one of the concerned officials said that it starts with an assistant examiner evaluating the answer sheets, followed by a chief examiner randomly checking the papers to identify errors if any. In the last stage, a scrutinizer checks for the possible miscalculation and other errors if any.

The officials opined that even they would face a punishment from the board, if there was  any error from their side. “Apart from getting debarred from evaluating the answer sheets of the next year, we could also be fined up to Rs. 10000 per mistake,” he said.

However, several opine that when the fault was identified with the board in inter results issue, it should walk that extra mile, to make sure every student gets the right justice. Otherwise, it could cost big to the students lives.
