Covid-19 vaccine centres in Mumbai to remain closed for today

The COVID-19 vaccination centres operated by Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will remain closed on May 23.

The municipal corporation, in a statement issued on May 22, announced to the city residents that the vaccine drive would be withdrawn for today at all the vaccination centres run by it. Nevertheless, the inoculation would resume at the private hospitals.

The decision comes after a scarcity of vaccine jabs erupted amid rising demand among general public. The administration is making all necessary arrangements to rev up the production of covid vaccines.

“Dear Mumbaikars. There will be no vaccination at any of the centres tomorrow. Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday. The details for Monday will be shared tomorrow by this handle and the respective wards too,” the BMC tweeted.

Previously, the Maharashtra government had rescinded the state-wide inoculation drive for non-priority group – those aged between 18 and 44 – due to shortage of vaccine doses as it was focused more for the 45-plus age group.

During an acute shortage of COVID-19 vaccines in the nation, executive director of Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) Suresh Jadhav on Friday purported that the government began vaccinating people from multiple age groups without rechecking the available stock of vaccines and the WHO guidelines.
