In the recent times, the herd immunity strategy had been overly propagated and highlighted as the remedy for Corona when it worked in few countries. However, with the rampant spread of virus and it’s unpredictable changing shape, there were reports of infection though.
While speaking in a press conference, Bill Gates has shed light on why the herd immunity strategy will turn futile.
“Letting people get sick until most are immune and the disease no longer spreads easily will lead to many millions of deaths. The second (issue not being addressed) is that herd immunity is always temporary, because children are born without immunity, and eventually there will be enough susceptible people that the disease can start spreading easily again,” said Gates, co-chair of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
He further added that a vaccine is critical to end the Covid-19 pandemic, where India’s pharmaceutical industry would supposedly play a key role owing to its ability to manufacture high-quality vaccines at affordable prices, said Bill Gates in an email.
Experts too believe that vaccines have been influential in the past where once common diseases such as polio, measles mumps, and chickenpox which are very seldom today, occurred because the few unvaccinated individuals who get infected couldn’t spread it to the vaccinated population.
