Anikha Surendran Interview: Sitara is like my home production

Actress Anikha Surendran was last seen in the Telugu movie, The Ghost. Now, her first Telugu movie Butta Bomma as a heroine is up for a grand release in theaters on January 26, 2023. Here is the actress’s brief interview.

You have been working in the industry for the past 10 years. you started out as a child artist, are there any differences between then and now?

Acting wise, there are no changes. Now I am getting to know the process of filmmaking more than I used to, back then. Then, movies were more like a vacation for me. Proud to be working with big actors across various languages now.

What was your initial reaction when you got an offer to be the heroine of Buttabomma?

I had just watched Kappela back then, and when I got the call, I was thrilled and was sure that I had to do this movie at any cost.

How did you approach this character, as it’s already been done?

I did not want to copy what was done in the original, and the director was of the same opinion as well. So I approached it with a new mind and did what I felt was right for the character.

Were there any struggles while approaching the character?

Not at all. I watched the original several times for reference, and just copied the director and went with my instincts to play the character.

How was it working with Arjun Das and Surya?

I was alone for 20 days. Both of them are absolutely wonderful. Arjun Das and I vibed a lot as he was a non-Telugu person as well. Surya sir helped me a lot with Telugu during our scenes.

Was it tough speaking Telugu?

Initially, it was very hard. Tamil is easier for me because it’s close to Malayalam, and I am a Malayali. But the Assistant Directors helped me a lot and it got easier down the line. It was a challenge for me, definitely. I did not dub for my character.

How does it feel when you watch yourself on screen with someone else’s voice?

They got someone whose voice was very similar to mine, so it was good.

Performance wise, did you feel any pressure, as you are the heroine?

Not at all. Since this is a heroine oriented role, I gave my best and tried to drive it as best as I can.

How does it feel to be carrying the entire film on your shoulders?

It was challenging, yes, but I gave my best and hope it will work out best.

Do you find smaller dialogues easier or longer dialogues easier to perform?

Both have its pros and cons. Because I was learning a new language, I found monologues easier to learn than small dialogues as I learned bigger lines better.

Do you know the meaning of the title of the film?

Yes, it’s a doll right?

Did you ever ask the producer why you were the choice for the film?

No, I didn’t. But I am happy that I was his choice.

What made you pick this role as your Telugu debut?

I loved Kappela when I watched it. So that was a reason, and Sitara is such a huge banner, so that’s another one.

Are there any changes from the original in the Telugu movie?

The movie is more colourful and a few changes have been made to suit the Telugu audiences.

Did you ever get intimidated by Arjun Das’s voice?

Arjun Das is an absolute sweetheart, and it was wonderful working with him. His voice is not as scary in person.

What are the differences in filmmaking in Tollywood, that you have seen?

In Telugu, everything is a little bit more prepared. In Telugu, we get a proper script prior to shoot, rest all is the same.

Do you wish to make more films in Telugu after this?

I would love to. Just waiting for the right scripts.

Do you have any dream roles?

Nothing in particular, but I would love to do female oriented roles more.

What have you learnt from this project?

Honestly, a lot. Acting wise itself, I learnt a lot. Ramesh sir helped me a lot, and my performance

Don’t you think a director being so particular is a con while performing?

Initially, it did feel weird. But, it has its pros.

Can you tell us about your future projects?

Malayalam movie Oh My Darling in February, A Tamil film with Hip Hop Adi. There are a few Telugu films as well.

How is the production house?

I think it’s one of the best production houses that I have worked in, till date. Sitara has become like my home production.

At an age where people of your age are doing something else, how is working so long and continuing acting? What motivates you?

What I do is something that not many do. I have a lot of support from my friends, so I think that’s what keeps me going.

Which role do you like more, the one in Ghost or this?

I feel more connected to this character, while the character in Ghost was a bit different. I love both the roles though.
