Hyderabad: Earlier in January government declared that Free drinking water supply scheme in Hyderabad will only benefit landowners, not their tenants. It came to notice when Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) mandated to link Aadhaar numbers to Customer Account Numbers (CANs) and filter out beneficiaries owning multiple residences in the city.
Once the Aadhaar is linked to CAN, the software will detect names of all family members and make them ineligible to get free drinking water. With that, consumers dwelling in rented houses could not avail the offer. For citizens residing in apartments, the board will procure individual occupancy certificates of flats. Flat owners will have to fix water meters at their own cost, which happened to be a burdensome affair despite announcing free water scheme.
Of late reports stated that domestic consumers can visit nearby MeeSeva centres in their localities and link their Aadhaar card data with their consumer account number (CAN) to benefit from the 20 kl free water supply scheme.
The HMWS&SB facilitated the scheme to its consumers by liasioning with MeeSeva centres in the city and GHMC peripheral areas. Consumption above 20 kilolitres will be charged based on applicable tariff with effect from December 2020.
