Raakshasa Kaavyam Review: Unbearable

Abhai Naveen, Anvesh Michael, Dayanand Reddy, and several others teamed up together for a film called Raakshasa Kaavyam, the trailer of which managed to raise the interest of audiences a little bit. The film has now hit the theatres, and let us see how it has turned out to be.

Story:

Raakshasa Kaavyam is about a group of boys who grow up in a slum, and due to their lack of education, they become thugs and try to earn money through illegal means. They also experience a lot of turmoil at their homes, and in all this process, they are involved in a murder, which turns their lives upside down. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

On-Screen Performances:

Abhai Naveen is the most well-known face of the lot, and given that he is mostly known for his comedy roles, it does get a little uncomfortable to see him in his role in the movie. He tries to give his best in the character that he’s playing, but the way the character has been written and the direction doesn’t help much, making the character feel empty and soulless. Abhai also looks misfit for the role in many scenes.

Anvesh Michael is a little more believable in his character and seems to have been able to better portray the struggles of a slum boy than Abhai. This could mostly be because Anvesh is new to the industry and has not been seen much so far.

The rest of the supporting cast is just alright, and they try to give their best in the characters that they have been given. But apart from that, no one really manages to make any impact at all.

Off-Screen Talents:

Writer and director Sriman Keerthi seems to have been very much intent on following the trend of the many rags-to-riches storylines that we are getting to see in recent times. His basic plot has a lot of scope and the elements that he chose to include as part of his story are also fine. However, the execution part of it is a complete failure. He fails to present what he wants to, in the right way. This removes the overall experience and makes the film highly convoluted, confusing, and messy.

The cinematography is one of the few highlights of the film. The production design is just alright, and the editing could have been better.

The background music is okay, but doesn’t make any impact on the story, and feels mostly silent, and sometimes, too distracting as well.

Verdict: Raakshasa Kaavyam may have taken several inspirations, but it is an uninspiring movie. The movie doesn’t provide a good experience and is better ignored.
