Parliamentary committee summons Twitter on June 18

Summons have been sent to Twitter on the implementation of the new IT regulations introduced by the central government. Parliamentary Standing Committee for Information and Technology summoned the microblogging site to appear before the panel in Parliament Complex on June 18 at 4 pm and give representation on how to prevent misuse of social media and online news.

The committee said a Twitter spokesperson should come up with a plan on how to prevent the misuse of social media and online news information.

“To hear the views of representatives of Twitter followed by evidence of representatives Electronics Technology ‘Safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on woman’s security in the digital space’,” Parliamentary Panel agenda read.

“It is noted that despite repeated letters from the ministry, Twitter had failed to provide adequate clarifications,” Rakesh Maheshwari, group coordinator for cyberlaw at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in a letter to Twitter.

Under the new rules, the companies will have to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer. Twitter has not yet decided on that. Also, according to the rules, the Center was outraged that the Resident Grievance Office did not appoint nodal contact officers from India. Allegedly reluctant to comply with new regulations when they come into force. The central government has issued a final warning in this regard.
