Oscar-nominated Hollywood actor George Segal dies at 87

George Segal, the Oscar-nominated actor, passed away on Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California because of complications from bypass surgery. He was 87.

Segal’s wife Sonia Segal confirmed the tragic news with a statement saying that the veteran actor’s family is devastated to announce George Segal’s death.

“The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery,” she said in the statement.

Hailing from Great Neck, New York, George Segal won an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for Mike Nichols’ 1966 Edward Albee adaptation: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? — co-starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Segal also starred in films such as Ships of Fools (1965), The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967), Bye Bye Braverman (1968), Where’s Poppa? (1970), The Owl and the Pussycat (1970), Blume in Love (1973) and California Split (1974).
