The Supreme Court Friday issued notices to the Center and the Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) on a petition seeking removal of the requirement of Aadhaar on the CoWIN portal in order to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and B V Nagarathna sought clarification from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and UIDAI in this regard.
It is learned that Siddharth Shankar Sharma, a social activist, has filed public interest litigation stating that apart from seven identity documents mentioned in the CoWIN portal, Aadhaar is still being insisted upon.
To this end, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has been directed to make some changes in the technology. The Center has also been directed to update the technology so that every citizen of the country can easily access the CoWIN portal.
