The Telangana government has faced a strong backlash from National Green Tribunal. The NTG on Friday directed the Telangana government to suspend work on the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme.
NGT indicated that the project works were undertaken without environmental permits. The Tribunal, which is probing the project following a complaint by the AP government, has already issued a verdict.
The farmers of AP filed a petition on July 15 in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the Palamuru Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme. NGT has set up a committee to look into the matter. In the petition, the farmers have demanded that the project be restricted to drinking water requirements until environmental clearances are taken.
The Tribunal has directed the Krishna River Ownership Board (KRMB) to submit a report on the project by October 1 this year.
The AP government is strongly opposing the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation project. The YS Jagan government claims that the project was constructed to misuse the waters of the Krishna River in Telangana. On the other hand, Telangana is strongly opposed to the Rayalaseema lift irrigation project being built by the AP government.
