In a heart-wrenching incident, more than 900 people were killed and hundreds were injured in a massive earthquake on Wednesday.
The country, which was taken over by the Taliban last year, witnessed an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 and the reports suggest that the death toll is likely to rise.
Maulvi Sharafuddin Muslim, Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management, said that 920 people were killed and 610 injured in the quake in several provinces. He also called for international aid to address the plight of the victims.
The earthquake struck about 44 km from the city of Khost, near the Pakistani border, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGC) said. Most of the deaths so far were reported in the Gayan and Barmal districts in Paktika.
As per the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over 7,000 people have been killed in earthquakes in the country in the past 10 years.
