Local body elections: AP High Court rejects govt’s plea

The high court of Andhra Pradesh has rejected the state government’s plea to impose a stay on the election commission’s proposal to hold the local body elections in February.

Panchayat Raj special officer Gopalakrishna Dwivedi approached the high court, asking to impose a stay on local body elections schedule. The high court had called for multiple hearings regarding this case and eventually rejected the government’s plea.

The YCP government mentioned that over 6000 people had died due to Covid-19 till now and it would be a risky proposition to hold the local body elections now. However, the high court rejected the case, saying they can’t impose a stay on the elections at this point in time.

Election Commission chief Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar is determined to hold the election in February and even called for an all-party meeting a few weeks ago.

The ruling party YSRC did not attend the all-party meeting. Now, they approached the high court, asking for postponement, only for their plea to be rejected.
