Whether to hold direct or indirection elections to civic bodies? This is the new challenge before the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao.
He is apparently of the view that in case of direct elections what will be its impact? Will direct election of municipal chairman and Mayor of a corporation ensure democratic functioning or it creates chaotic conditions? A possible threat to majority’s view at stake! To overcome this dilemma, he directed senior municipal administrators to study what other states are following, it is reliably leant.
According to senior administrators, in all other states, the elections are held indirectly. In such a scenario, if the state adopts ‘direct’ polls what would be the impact? Or just follow the past?
Only after clarity from the officials, whether to introduce direct polls to the civic bodies chiefs or not, the Chief Minister is likely to take a final call holding elections at the earliest. A new Municipal Act likely to be framed incorporating any other shortfalls in strengthening the powers as well functioning of the civic bodies administration.
Reason behind the Chief Minister’s hurried consultations with the officials over the civic body polls as the existing 104 municipalities term set to end in June, it is gathered.
Sources close to the Chief Minister claims that he is determined to bring in some changes in the administration of these civic bodies by strengthening the existing loopholes to make sure to serve the people better. There are six Corporations in the newly formed 31 districts of Telangana, besides 104 municipalities.
