Telangana Chief Minister KCR introduced the Dalit Bandhu scheme in June last year, in the hope that it would fetch him the victory of the TRS party in the Huzurabad by-polls. This was following the resignation of Etela Rajendar from the TRS party, and joining the BJP. However, the Dalit Bandhu scheme failed to do that, with Etela once again winning the Huzurabad seat in the by-polls.
According to the scheme, 10 Lakhs would be given to the eligible Dalit families, so that they would be able to support themselves. After the by-polls, neither the members of the TRS party, nor CM KCR talked about the scheme anymore, which raised a lot of eyebrows, and led to everyone criticising KCR for his actions.
Now, all of a sudden, KCR has resurrected this idea, by instructing all the ministers, TRS MLAs and collectors on Saturday to implement the Dalit Bandhu scheme in all the remaining 118 Assembly constituencies in March and directed them to select 100 Dalit families in each constituency. Given that there are no elections in Telangana until December 2023, everyone is wondering why KCR decided this course of action, with many speculating that the main reason for this could be that the BJP is concentrating on 19 Assembly constituencies in the upcoming elections, all of which are reserved for the Dalit community.
