When Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was in the opposition, he participated in a lot of protests, and repeatedly pressurised and questioned the ruling TDP why they were not trying hard enough to get approval from the centre, for AP’s Special Status.
After coming to power though, Jagan made it clear that his government was not in a position to demand Special Status, but promised the people of the state that he would continue to ask the Center about the special status.
The YSRCP government did ask the central government about the Special Status for AP several times, but every single time, the Centre’s answer was no. This continues to go on even now, with the Central government still very unlikely to sanction special status for AP.
On the other hand, the BJP promised to give Special Status to Puducherry, if the BJP came to power after the ongoing general elections in the Union Territory. While it can be understood that the BJP would be looking to gain more votes, it is to be kept in mind that the BJP made it clear that special status would not be given to any state, not just to AP.
Back in AP, a lot of pressure is mounting on the Jagan government, exerted by the opposition TDP, who are demanding the government bring special status to AP. However, these demands of the TDP are being refuted by counterattacks from YSRCP leaders.
