Good news for WhatsApp users!. You can send money and make payments from this messaging app henceforth. The central government has given permission for economic activities on WhatsApp. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Thursday said the services would be made available in phases. While Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was pleased with the center’s approvals and announced via video message that the service would be available from Friday.
“India specializes in UPI (United Payments Interface). It is leveraging new opportunities in micro and small businesses that are the backbone of the country’s economy. India is the first country to achieve such a feat. We are also delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to Digital India, “said Zuckerberg.
Although WhatsApp Payments services will be available in India from today, not all users will be able to make payments. NPCI stated the services would be made accessible in phases. NPCI has made it clear that it will initially launch these services only with 2 crore WhatsApp users.
It is learned that the company has been attempting for the last two years to make WhatsApp Payments approved in India in view of the potential for market expansion. Permissions were finally granted today.
