COVID-19: UK reports first Omicron variant death

The newly discovered Covid-19 variant ‘Omicron’ is spreading like a wildfire across the world.

Now, the United Kingdom has reported its first death due to the Omicron variant of coronavirus. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, during a visit to a vaccination clinic near Paddington, said a tidal wave of the highly transmissible variant is on its way.

The PM announced an enhanced Omicron Emergency Boost campaign to offer a third top-up dose of a Covid-19 vaccine for all adults aged over 18 years.

“I am afraid we are now facing an emergency in our battle with the new variant, Omicron, and we must urgently reinforce our wall of vaccine protection to keep our friends and loved one’s safe,” Johnson said.

The UK Health Security Agency said there were 4,713 Omicron cases on Monday, up 1,576 in 24 hours.
