#Convicted: Rahul Gandhi gets 2 years in jail

In a major development, a court in Gujarat’s Surat city today found Congress leader Rahul Gandhi guilty in a 2019 criminal defamation case and sentenced him to two years in prison.

Back in 2019, Rahul Gandhi made controversial remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The case was filed against the Congress leader by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for saying, “How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?”

The court, which sentenced Mr Gandhi, however, granted bail immediately after his request and allowed him to appeal this judgment in the higher court. To this extent, the sentence has been suspended for 30 days. Rahul was present in the court when the verdict was delivered. He has been convicted under IPC Section 504.
