The Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission on Friday expressed outrage on online aggregator BookMyShow and movie hall chain PVR Cinemas for levying internet handling charges on consumers. The court has penalised Rs 5,000 on BookMyShow and PVR Cinemas.
The platforms also have to pay an amount of Rs 25,000 as compensation and an additional Rs 1,000 towards litigation costs to the complainant Vijay Gopal.
The verdict in the case came after 25 months of wait. The court warned that if the money was not paid within 45 days, it would have to pay with 18 percent interest from the time of the verdict.
Going to the case, Vijay Gopal from Secunderabad booked a ticket to watch the movie at the PVR Cinemas in Panjagutta through the Book My Show website.
During the payment process, the extra amount had been charged to him. Post this, he lodged a complaint with the Central Consumer Affairs Ministry on January 18, 2019.
