Talented young hero Vishwak Sen has tried something new with Gaami, which is banking on an intriguing trailer. The adventure thriller is directed by Vidyadhar and it has Vishwak in the role that resembles an Aghora. The film hit the theaters today and here is our review of the same.

Story: Shankar(Vishwak) is a wounded Aghora who is suffering from a rare human condition. He sets out on the journey to find the natural cure for this condition as he is on the search for Maali leaves which blossom once every 36 years can cure his condition. Scientist Chandini Chowdary is also in search for a set of mushrooms with medicinal properties. Then there is a Devadasi. How does these three tracks align? This forms the core plot.

What about the actors’ performance?

First and foremost, Vishwak Sen has picked a new-age subject and presented it in a true to the theme manner. But on the acting front, there isn’t much scope as the focus is mostly on the technical and visual elements. He has attempted something new and that’s about it. Chandini Chowdary is decent in her role, albeit it is a brief one. The rest of the cast is alright.

What about off-screen talents?

The director Vidyadhar sets out on an ambitious filmmaking project with Gaami which demands the very best of storytelling and technical finesse. Technically, he puts up a decent product. But the storytelling is where he falters with the narration falling flat. The opening 30 minutes are good and they pack the right punch but as things progress, the flat narration gets monotonous.

The issue with such films in Tollywood is that they cater only to a section of the audience and that too predominantly to multiplex audiences. The film goes on a very serious note and the flat narration doesn’t offer much on excitement front.

Comparatively, the opening half is better as the world of Gaami looks good on screen, but once the initial freshness is gone, the slow pace of the proceedings can’t keep the viewers hooked. As a result, the second half falls flat.

The cinematography and visual presentation are of very good quality. The background score is in tune with the nature of the narrative and it works the trick. Making values are good.

What’s Hot?

  • Actor’s performance
  • Technical finesse
  • Fresh attempt

What’s Not?

  • Flat narrative
  • Weak second half
  • Monotonous

Verdict: Gaami is undeniably an honest attempt from the cast and crew. Despite the shortcoming on the narrative front, we don’t get films like these in Tollywood every Friday so it deserves appreciation. Just that a better narrative could have worked more in its favor. A genuine attempt nevertheless.
