Tollywood’s market has been struggling recently due to a lack of new releases with major stars. This situation has become even worse due to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the buzz around the general elections, which have overshadowed the release of several smaller films in the past two months.
In response to these challenges, a number of single-screen theater owners in Telangana have made the difficult decision to temporarily close their doors in an effort to minimise financial losses.
The closures are set to begin on Friday, May 17, and are expected to last for 10 days, with plans to resume operations in June if conditions become more favorable.
Despite the re-release of classic films starring renowned Tollywood actors, which saw moderate success over a weekend, the revenue generated was insufficient to offset operational costs.
The industry is hopeful for a turnaround with the upcoming releases of big-budget films like Prabhas and Deepika Padukone’s “Kalki 2898 AD,” Allu Arjun’s “Pushpa 2: The Rule,” and other anticipated pan-India projects.
