In AP, majorly in Guntur, Kurnool, Krishna, West Godavari, East Godavari, and Prakasam districts we can find numerous donkeys. Nowadays, the donkey’s number is gradually decreasing.
According to animal welfare officials, the reason for the slaughter of donkeys is for meat, healing back pain and asthma as well as work as an aphrodisiac.
There is a special demand for donkey meat in many parts of the state. With this, some traders are smuggling donkeys from AP to other states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
The number of donkeys, which was once thousands in Andhra Pradesh, is now limited to 5,000. Authorities say the donkeys become extinct if the situation continues.
But Animal Welfare Organization (NGO) secretary Gopal R Surabathula expressed concern that in the coming days’ donkeys too will be seen in the zoo itself.
