In a tragic incident, eight people died and over 20 others suffered injuries in a series of blasts in a fireworks manufacturing unit at Achankulam near Sattur in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Friday afternoon.
As per the reports, a massive fire broke out around 1.30 pm at Mariyammal Fireworks and the explosion was heard over two kilometres in the village.
Fire tenders from Vembakottai, Sattur and Sivakasi rushed to the spot and calmed down the blaze after hours of battling. The identity of the deceased is yet to be revealed, as the bodies are burned beyond recognition.
The injured were shifted to government hospitals in a nearby village. The officials said that the friction while handling chemicals had caused the explosion. A detailed investigation is ordered and more details are yet to be out.
