Haryana police on Sunday arrested former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh as part of an investigation into a complaint that he had used a casteist slur in a live video against cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal.
However, Yuvraj was immediately released on bail. The former cricketer, who took part in a live session with cricketer Rohit Sharma in June last year, spoke about fellow cricketer Chahal. During which he made some insulting remarks while referring to the social class.
Responding to the controversy, Yuvraj tweeted that he did not say anything on purpose and apologized if his words hurt anyone. However, a lawyer approached the Hansi police, alleging that Yuvraj’s remarks were indicative of caste arrogance. Hisar police, who conducted an inquiry into the complaint, has registered a case against Yuvraj under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police have registered the FIR under Sections 153, 153A, 295, 505 of IPC, and sections 3 (1) (r) and 3 (1) (s) of SC/ST Act.
“As per court orders, Yuvraj Singh was arrested and then released on interim bail on Saturday,” Nitika Gahlaut, a senior police officer in Haryana’s Hansi.
