WHO gives clarity on cessation of Astrazeneca’s covid-19 vaccine trials

Oflate a woman who received a first inoculation of covid-19 vaccine developed severe neurological symptoms that called for a pause in testing, a spokesman for drugmaker AstraZeneca reported on Thursday.

In this regard, World Health Organization announced that the cessation of Astrazeneca covid vaccine trials is only a wake-up call. WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan clarified that this is just one instance of the ups and downs of clinical trials. She hoped that researchers should be more prepared for untowardly incidents this and should not be disheartened. It has been proven since long that such conditions are part and parcel of vaccine trials.

Mike Ryan, head of the World Health Organization’s emergency department, said that this was not a competition between vaccine manufacturers or countries, but only to save lives. The decision had come after a lot of fast track approval requests from manufacturers across the world. WHO feared that in the cut throat competition to outshine others, the researchers are overlooking the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.

It also suggested that diagnostic tests could greatly reduce the risk of early detection of the virus. On the other hand, the world’s largest vaccine maker, Serum Institute of India, too kept the trials of the Covid-19 vaccine on hold in the wake of AstraZeneca’s unfortuante incident.
