Indian skipper Virat Kohli is likely to face a one-match ban over an argument with umpire Nitin Menon during the last over of Day 3 of the second Test against England at Chennai. The argument happened after India’s review resulted in favour of batsman Joe Root as an umpire’s call.
On the last over of the day, a delivery from spinner Axar Patel deflected off Root’s pad, onto Keeper’s gloves. India appealed and eventually opted for a review after umpire Nitin Menon remained quiet. The review showed that there was no bat connected, and the ball’s contact on the pad resulted in umpire’s call in England’ favour. This led to a heated talk between Virat and umpire Menon.
According to Article 2.8 of the ICC Rules, it is incorrect to argue with the umpires on the field or to oppose the decision of the umpire. The ICC is likely to take action against Virat Kohli under this provision. The punishment for such an offence could bring Level 1 or Level 2 charges on the skipper, resulting in one to four demerit points.
A total of four demerit points within 24 months result in a player being suspended for 1 Test/2 ODIs or T20Is. The Indian captain already has two demerit points to his name.
This was Virat Kohli’s second episode with the umpire during the day. Earlier, when the skipper was batting, he was cautioned by Menon for running on the centre of the pitch.
