UK Government approves extradition of Nirav Modi to India

The United Kingdom government has approved the extradition of scam-accused billionaire Nirav Modi to India. The British Home Secretary Priti Patel signed the extradition order today.

Nirav Modi is wanted by Indian courts for fraud and money laundering in the Rs 14,000 Cr Punjab National Bank loan scam.

Nirav Modi has the option of legally challenging the extradition within 28 days before the UK High Court. He was arrested in 2019 from a metro station in London on an extradition warrant. Since then, he has been lodged in a UK prison. Although he applied for bail, the court denied it as the accused was a flight risk.

Once surrendered to India, Modi will face charges of fraud, money laundering, threatening of witnesses and disappearance of evidence.
