Social networking service Twitter has lost legal immunity in India over its failure to comply with the new IT rules. This means that the microblogging site has to deal with criminal cases and other actions for users’ objectionable posts.
The new IT rules made by the Center to regulate digital content on social media came into effect on May 26. According to the latest IT regulations, social media users with more than 50 lakh users are required to appoint a Complaints Officer, a Nodal Officer and another Chief Executive Officer.
All three must be living in India. However, the Center was outraged that Twitter did not follow the rules despite other social media companies following the rules. Final notices were issued in the first week of June.
However, no official order has been issued so far on the termination of the mediator status. It is noteworthy that this is the first social media platform in India to lose this status.
In Uttar Pradesh, on the other hand, a case was registered on Twitter. Faizabad police have registered an FIR against Twitter and some journalists in connection with the June 5 attack on a Muslim man. The case was registered on Twitter for failing to remove objectionable and misleading information from social media.
