TS government sells land at very low cost, HC intervenes

The Telugu governments are doing some really reckless things of late, or so it at least seems. The Telangana state government had decided to sell 5 acres of land to director Shankar, at a cost of Rs. 5 lakhs per acre.

The fact is that this land costs Rs. 2.5 Crores per acre, at least, and the cost at which the government has decided to sell it is almost nothing.

The High Court said that it is not right for the Film Industry to take lands that belong to the government, and especially not at such low prices.

The HC said that the government should be reasonable while selling anything to anyone, and should quote a price that is closer to the actual price of the land. In this case, the HC quoted a minimum of Rs. 2 Crores per acre.

Director Shankar has been allotted 5 acres for a studio, in Rangareddy district’s Shankarapalli. Objecting the cost at which this land is being sold to him, J. Shankar, of Karimnagar, has filed a Public Interest Litigation in the High Court.

This case was headed by Justice R.S.Chauhan, along with Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy. Advocate General B.S.Prasad had argued on the side of the government. B.S.Prasad said that the government had given away lands to the Film Industry at low prices in 1984, when the TFI was shifting from Madras to Hyderabad. He questioned why the same thing was wrong now.

Furthermore, B.S.Prasad said that Shankar was the only one from the Film Industry who was instrumental in supporting the cause for a separate Telangana during the Telangana agitations.

To this, the HC replied taht there were thousands of others who supported the cause and asked if the government would give away lands to them as well, at such low prices.

The HC also said that there was Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, which was equipped with all the latest technology for film shootings, and that everyone should make use of RFC.

The HC also said that the government should in fact promote film shootings by establishing a studio on its behalf, like the Rajasthan government did. This would prove to be a huge profit for the government, the HC added.
