Supreme court to hear the plea to change India’s name tomorrow

The Supreme Court is likely to hear a petition filed by the Supreme Court on June 2 to change the name of India to Bharat or Hindustan. The Supreme Court is deciding a petition filed by the petitioner seeking to change the name of India to Bharat in the official nomenclature. Petitioner noted that doing so would increase the self-esteem and patriotic feel in the people and thereby glorify the country.

Article 1 also specifies the country’s name and boundaries. The plea was originally enlisted for hearing in the Supreme Court on Friday (May 29). But since Chief Justice of India SA Babdee was unavailable and it was subsequently removed from the list. The petition is due to be heard before the court tomorrow, according to a notice given in the Supreme Court.

The petition was filed by a man called Namah who hails from Delhi. The petitioner claimed that in case the  ‘Bharat’ is changed to Hindustan the people of the country could get away with the idea that they were under the rule of Britishers. Article 1 (1) of the Constitution comprises, India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States. The petitioner claims the name “India” is a “symbol of slavery”

The name of India being replaced with Hindustan serves also as a reminder of great freedom fighters who fought for independence. In the plea, petitioner also mentioned that in 1948 there had been a strong disapproval against the name ‘India’ and it was recommended to change to Bharat.
