Sridevi Shoban Babu Review: Stale and routine

Santosh Shoban came up with another film this year, after Kalyanam Kamaneeyam, which was released for Sankranthi. Sridevi Shoban Babu, his latest film, has been released today. Let’s see how the film has turned out to be.

Story:

Sridevi (Gowri G Kishan) is a fashion designer, living with her father Chandrasekhar (Naga Babu), in Hyderabad. When she wishes to move to Araku to work on tribal her new wear collection, her father objects to it. He narrates his past where he had a fallout with his younger sister, Kamala (Rohini). Sridevi anyhow moves to Araku, where she meets Shoban Babu, who she finds out is her bava (Santosh Shobhan). Shoban is angry with his uncle, and the rest of the story is about how the families are patched up.

On-Screen Performances:

Santosh Shoban’s performance is a lot better in this film, when compared to his performance in ‘Kalyanam Kamaneeyam’, in which he was seen as a class guy. In this film, he is seen as a villager, and gets to show a slight variation in his performance.

Gowri Kishan, of ‘Jaanu’ and ’96’ fame looks good and performs well within the scope that she’s given.

Naga Babu and Rohini Molleti get a good scope to perform, and they are good in the sentimental scenes that they have been given.

The rest of the supporting cast, especially the comedians, don’t deliver anything.

Off-Screen Talents:

The story written by director Prasanth is very routine and has nothing new to offer to the audience. It’s a very basic family drama that has been several times before. However, had the director been more careful with the way he handled the screenplay of the film, Sridevi Shoban Babu could have been a lot more entertaining and impactful.

Coming to the lead actor, it is time that Santosh Shoban starts choosing better scripts as he has been coming up with one stale concept after another now.

The production values look subpar in the film, and could have been so much better. The background music by Kamran is a good asset for the film. The cinematography is okay, but the editing could have been improved by a lot.

Plus Points:

  • Some sentimental scenes.
  • The emotions between friends.
  • Kamran’s background music.

Minus Points:

  • Outdated storyline
  • Routine execution
  • There are no highs.
  • The comedy is stale.

Verdict: ‘Sridevi Shoban Babu’ is a badly-written film. The making values are poor. The execution is also very routine and bores the audeince. Family stories can look outdated when the conflict is poor. It can be skipped in theatres.
