Mahbubabad MP Malothu Kavitha has been sentenced to six months of jail time by the Court of Public Representatives for distributing money to voters during the 2019 elections when she contested on behalf of the TRS party. Given that there were proofs of Kavitha distributing money to votes, the Court of Public Representatives sentenced her to six months of jail time.
However, Kavitha has been granted bail by the Court of Public Representatives and has also been given a chance to approach the High Court on the same. Even if the HC gives a stay order on the bail, and if Kavitha ends up going to jail, she wouldn’t be disqualified from her MP post, as that would require a minimum of two years jail time. Apart from being sentenced to six months of jail time, Kavitha has also been fined Rs. 10,000, which she paid immediately.
With the Supreme Court ordering for the expedition of cases on Public representatives, the same is happening in every state, where several representatives are walking away scar free, while some are being charged accordingly. A few days ago, Danam Nagender was also sentenced to six months in jail. On the other hand, compared to the rest of the states, the cases on public representatives are being heard at a faster rate in Telangana.
