The Supreme Court of India on Monday upheld the 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in admissions and government jobs.
Hearing pleas challenging the 103rd Constitution Amendment, the five-judge Apex Court bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit, Justice S Ravindra Bhat, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Justice Bela M Trivedi, and Justice JB Pardiwala delivered the verdict with a 3:2 majority.
The 10% reservation for EWS excludes the poor among Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes from its ambit.
The five-judge bench had reserved its order on this case on September 27 after hearing several counsels in seven days.
