The city of Hyderabad has been witnessing heavy rainfall in certain areas, while a few areas are experiencing mild to moderate rainfall. This has been going on since Monday, and is expected to go on for another 24 hours.
This morning, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that there would be really heavy rainfall in certain places, goin well beyond 20 cm. As a result, the IMD issued a red alert warning, asking the residents of the city to take care of themselves, and to make sure that they are under proper shelter until the end of the red alert.
The regional office of IMD in Hyderabad has also issued Red alert to other districts in Telangana, including Siddipet, Janagaon, Peddapalli, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri, Kothagudem, Warangal (urban and rural), Mahabubabad, Khammam, Nalgonda, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, and Suryapet.
This heavy rainfall is expected to result in major losses, including massive flooding and water-logging in low-lying areas, falling of trees and electric poles, disruption of road traffic, overflowing of reservoirs, submerging of agricultural lands and crop damage as well. Road, air and rail traffic are being carefully monitored across the state, and the necessary precautions are being taken by the municipal authorities, to make sure that there is no spread of water-borne diseases.
It is expected that things may normalise in certain areas by Wednesday, but certain areas are still expected to receive heavy rainfall, which is why the Red alert continues to be in place. This heavy rainfall will be caused because of the deep depression which has crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast close to Kakinada with a maximum sustained wind speed of 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph, at 7:30 AM this morning.
Apart from Telangana, heavy rainfalls are expected to cause disturbances in other states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, for the next 2-3 days.
