PM CARES fund will not be audited unless permitted

The Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations or PM CARES Fund, formed amid the coronavirus pandemic to be a hope for financial crisis, will not be audited by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), sources reported on Friday.

Sources in the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) workplaces stated, “since the fund depends on funds of people and associations, we reserve no privilege to review the charitable organisation.”

The Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations trust, built up by the bureau on March 28, has PM Narendra Modi as its chairperson and senior cabinet individuals as trustees.

Central Govt related sources have stated that the PM CARES fund would be audited and reviewed by independent auditors designated by the trustee

Unless the trustees permit us to audit, we will not be auditing the accounts,” a senior official in the comptroller and Auditor General of India said.

Many  leftists and other opposition party leaders had questioned why there is a need to begin a new fund called PMCARES when there is already an existing one called PMNRF. In this regard, although the committee has been tight lipped, PM has addressed it as an initiative to cater to the needs of people in distressing situations during the ongoing disaster with an exception of tax exemption.
