The Indian government has declared black fungus as a pandemic. The number of black fungus cases and the death toll is increasing rapidly. Previously, the Black fungus has been detected mostly in corona-recovered diabetic patients.
However, AIIMS director Randeep Guleria said people with high levels of diabetes were more likely prone to black fungus if they were once treated for Covid. It can also be a threat to those who are taking high doses of steroids.
Dr.Sarath Chandra, a professor of AIIMS Neurosurgery, said that wearing a mask for two or three weeks continuously increases the risk of black fungus. Dr.Suresh Singh Naruka, a doctor at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said that overuse of steroids is a primary factor of black fungus.
He advised that the masks should be cleaned daily. Corona victims who use more steroids should check their blood sugar levels regularly.
