The Election Commission of India has banned Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee from campaigning for a day for allegedly making objectionable remarks in speeches.
The BJP has complained that she has violated the code of conduct by calling on Muslims to vote for Trinamool candidates, harassing the central forces, provoking the people to turn against them, and so on.
EC gave her two notices the following week to respond to these. Unsatisfied with her justification for her remarks, EC banned her from campaigning for 24 hours and even from social media.
The ban will be in effect until 8 pm on Tuesday night. Mamata Banerjee has announced that she will hold a dharna at the Gandhi statue in Kolkata from noon on Tuesday to oppose the ECI decision.
