Jawan is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film co-written and directed by Tamil star director Atlee, in his first Hindi film. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, alongside Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sunil Grover, Riddhi Dogra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, Lehar Khan, Aaliyah Qureishi in key roles while Deepika Padukone & Sanjay Dutt are seen in special appearances. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander and the film is produced by Gauri Khan & Gaurav Verma under Red Chillies Entertainment banner.

Story:

The film is the story of a mysterious man (Shah Rukh Khan) who is set to rectify the wrongs in society by choosing an unconventional path with the help of his gang of 5 women. NSG officer Narmada (Nayanthara) is assigned to stop this man and his gang from their criminal activities. Will Narmada be successful in catching the gang? Who actually is this mysterious man and what is his connection with Kalee Gaikwad (Vijay Sethupathi), one of the biggest arms dealers in the world? Needs to be seen on big screens.

What about on-screen performances?

Shah Rukh Khan is in top form and he continues it with Jawan. He gets to don about 5-6 get up in the film and has a kickass entry scene in each of them. And he of course nails each one of them in his own style. This is for sure the massiest best of SRK we have seen in the recent past.

Nayanthara looks stunning and delivers a first-rate performance. It is refreshing to see her in a fierce role doing action sequences as well.

Vijay Sethupathi is okay initially but shines well in the second half. His look in his white beard and his Hindi dubbing are one of the biggest setbacks of the film.

Deepika Padukone is excellent in her limited yet important cameo.

Sanjay Dutt brings in a few laughs towards the end as Madhavan Naik and his cameo is crowd-pleasing.

Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Lehar Khan, Girija Oak & Sanjeeta Bhattacharya are adequate in their respective roles as SRK’s girl squad.

Sunil Grover, Ridhi Dogra, Eijaz Jhan, Ashlesha, and the rest of the supporting cast are fine in their parts.

What about off-screen talents?

The story by Atlee is pretty decent. Though plot-wise there isn’t anything new that is being told on screen, the story is packed with all masala scenes that will appeal to the masses and it also makes an important comment on our political system.

The screenplay by Atlee and S Ramanagirivasan is very routine and utterly predictable. The second half especially is not up to the mark and the emotions do not click as expected in the flashback portions. A few political and villain scenes have had a bit of South-making style which looked odd in between.

The Hindi dialogues by Sumit Arora are powerful and well-written. All the one-liners will induce claps and whistles in theatres.

Atlee’s direction is terrific. The way he showcased Shah Rukh Khan in a massy avatar in a stunning manner in dual roles needs to be appreciated. He treated the film in his trademark commercial style and it will surely be loved by all the Hindi audiences as well.

Anirudh’s background music is superb. Especially the Jawan Prevue score is kickass. But his songs come across as one of the weak points of the film. Except for the Chaleya song, none of his tunes click well.

GK Vishnu’s cinematography is top-class, and the action set pieces were captured in a superb manner.

The editing by Ruben needed to be more effective. A few scenes could have been trimmed in the second half.

Spiro Razatos, Anl Arasu, Craig Macrae, Yannick Ben, Kecha Khamphakdee, and Sunil Rodrigues’ action choreography is first-rate. All the action set pieces are very well choreographed and showcased on screen.

Special mentions to the production design, makeup artist, and prosthetics team.

The production values by Red Chillies Entertainment are top-notch.

What’s Hot?

* Shah Rukh Khan’s Performances In Dual Roles
* Atlee’s Direction & Treatment
* Kicakss Interval Sequence
* Truck Chase & Climax Fight Scenes
* Chaleya Song & Picturization
* Superb Background Score
* Camera Work & Production Values

What’s Not?

* Predictable Story
* Half Baked Second Half
* Boring Flashback Portions
* Cliched Villain Scenes
* Faraatta & Zinda Banda Songs
* Vijay Sethupathi’s Look & His Hindi Dubbing

Verdict: Overall Jawan is a decent masala entertainer with Atlee’s mark elevations and SRK’s massiest performance in a dual role. The predictability in the plot and the boring second half are a major hindrance to the overall experience of the film.
