India records over 2,100 deaths due to Black Fungus

In the last three weeks, the mortality rate of 50% in Black fungus or mucormycosis cases has grown over 150 percent in recovering Covid-19 patients in the country.

The various parts of the country reported 31,216 cases and 2,109 deaths due to black fungus in the last three weeks. The highest number of 7,057 cases was reported in Maharashtra, where 609 people died. Since then, 5,418 cases have come to light in Gujarat and 323 people were killed by the fungus. Rajasthan was third with 2,976 cases. In Karnataka, 188 people died due to the disease. In Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, more than a thousand cases have been reported.

The increase in numbers is partly because of the severe shortage of the key drug – Amphotericin-B – which is used for its treatment.

Black fungus has become a menace among those recovering from the Covid-19. Although this is not a new disease, Doctors say that the condition will worsen in a brief time for those affected. This is especially dangerous for diabetics. A few days ago, the Center directed the states to consider it under the Epidemic Diseases Act in the wake of the rising number of fungal cases.
