Hyderabad gearing up for another total lockdown?

When Coronavirus first started out in India, and was in its budding stages, the Central Government imposed a total lockdown in India. This lockdown lasted from March 25th to almost May 15th. After May 15th, governments all over the country started to give a few relaxations so that the Indian economy could get a breather after the slump it had to face for over two months.

With the current relaxations and unlocking, the number of Coronavirus cases are multiplying on a daily basis in the country, with more and more people testing positive on a daily basis. India’s metropolitan cities are the worst affected, with cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai being hotspots.

The capital city of Telangana, Hyderabad, is not far behind, with an alarming number of cases being reported every single day. Yesterday, Telangana reported more than 1000 cases, the biggest jump for the state so far, and Hyderabad contributed to nearly 90% of the cases.

As a result, many sources are now saying that a total lockdown might again be implemented in the city to reduce the number of infections. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) has himself released a statement saying that a total lockdown will be implemented in the city again if necessary. He further said that this will be discussed in the upcoming cabinet meeting in the next 2 or 3 days, and an official confirmation will be given accordingly. KCR added that 15 days of total lockdown is currently being planned, and that a final decision will be taken according to the situation in the state, especially in Hyderabad.

On the other hand, the government of Telangana is being heavily criticised by many for not conducting enough tests in the state. When other states are conducting as many as 20,000 tests per day, Telangana is not even able to conduct 5,000 tests in a single day.
